Alexander Calder BMW 3.0 CSL, 1975 "When everything is perfect, there is no fulfilHerrent." The BMW 3.0 CSL, with which Alexander Calder laid the foundation for the Art Car Collection in 1975, was also one of his last works of art before his death. As a sculptor who normally designs his own cars, Calder was able to free himself from the formal structure of racing cars. He wanted to give them his own unmistakable touch by painting them. As with his sculptures and mobilés, he used intense colors and gracefully curved surfaces, which he spread generously over the fenders, hood and roof.
